The Nutcracker, with its wonderful score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, has over the years become the perfect Christmas holiday ballet. It takes place during a Christmas party where the toy maker Drossellmeyer (Sir Anthony Dowell) comes to entertain the children. He gives Clara (Alina Cojocaru) a Nutcracker doll and she at once falls in love with it. When everyone has gone to bed Clara comes downstairs to find her doll and suddenly gets involved in a great adventure. She saves the Nutcracker Prince (Ivan Putrov) in the battle with the mice, is taken to the Land of Snow and on to the Land of Sweets where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy (Miyako Yoshida) and her Prince (Jonathan Cope). When she gets home, she meets a young man in the street that she recognises. He looks very much like the Nutcracker Prince and turns out to be Drossellmeyer's young nephew. Sir Peter Wright's production for the Royal Ballet is designed by Julia Trevelyan Oman and the orchestra of the Royal Opera House is conducted by Evgenii Svetlanov. The programme is introduced by Deborah Bull.

Roald Dahl's scary fairy tale is directed by Donald Sturrock. Follow inch-high forest dweller Don Mini (Ian Holm) into a weird world of mice on bicycles, cows in petticoats and a wild pig sporting a Kaiser helmet. Wolfie (Danny De Vito), bored with his diet, is after a new meal and thinks Grandma Hood will make a nice change. But this drunken granny puts up a fight to the finish. Undeterred and still hungry, stupid Wolfie lies in wait for Lil' Red Riding Hood, who may be sweet but is certainly not stupid. Julie Walters plays the humans in a black comedy that will erase the memory of the traditional story forever.

Peter Wright and Galina Samsova's production of Tchaikovsky's universally popular ballet, performed by The Royal Swedish Opera Ballet Company. First staged in 1877, Swan Lake continues to be the most universally popular of the classical ballets, both for its music and its story. Wright and Samsova originally created the version performed here for Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet in 1981. This version is renowned for its beauty and clear narration, with a rich choreography blending the Russian and British classical traditions.
